But encountering the works of Alan Moore and Neil Gaiman forced me to reconsider.   A graphic novel is not simplified literature — it is a different language, with its own grammar and syntax.   🎨 Visual Metaphors That Strike Instantly   While a writer spends paragraphs describing a character's inner state, an artist can show it in a single frame — through distorted perspective, color palette, or composition. Some ideas are easier to convey through image than through description. Comics do this naturally, without strained explanations.   In "ADENIUM: THE MIRROR CODE" («АДЕНИУМ: ЗЕРКАЛЬНЫЙ КОДЕКС»), I tried to capture the feeling of a mirror labyrinth in words. But rereading it now, I realize some scenes could benefit from visual embodiment.   🤫 The Power of Silence in a Frame   In traditional prose, silence is conveyed through pauses and ellipses. In comics, silence becomes visible — an empty frame, a close-up of a pensive face, a panel without text. This works brilliantly in mystical plots, where what is left unsaid is often scarier than explicit threats.   ⏳ Playing with Time   One of the most impressive qualities of the graphic novel is its ability to play with time. Panel size, their number on a page, placement — all of this creates a unique temporal rhythm. The Horror of the Ordinary   When I first picked up Fyodor Sologub's "The Petty Demon" fifteen years ago, it seemed heavy and excessively depressing. Rereading it now, I am amazed at how far ahead of its time it was.   This is not a story about a mad teacher. It is an investigation of how everyday life breeds monsters.   👹 Evil as Everyday Life   Sologub refuses grand evil. His evil is microscopic, almost domestic. Peredonov is not a demonic villain — he is a pitiful, unhappy man whose cruelty is born from his own inadequacy.   The atmosphere of the novel is slow suffocation. A provincial town oppresses its inhabitants not with brute force, but with a thousand small conventions, gossip, and hypocritical rituals. Reading it, I physically felt this stuffiness.   👻 The Nedotykomka — A Genius of Place   The nedotykomka is one of the most original images in Russian literature. Not a classical demon, but something far more terrifying — a creation of the environment itself. A creature that cannot be caught, described, or destroyed. Born from the very atmosphere of the place.   In my novel "THE POSTAL DEMON" («ПОЧТОВЫЙ ДЕМОН»), I experimented with creating beings born from human emotions and social phenomena. Sologub showed how it should be done.   📚 Why Read This Novel Today?   "The Petty Demon" reads as a diagnosis of our era — a time when trivial evil has become a mass phenomenon. Social media, office politics, neighborhood gossip — everywhere, their own nedotykomkas live.   Sologub reminds us: the most terrifying monsters do not come from outside. In "HEAVENLY ARCHIVE: FORGOTTEN SOULS" («НЕБЕСНЫЙ АРХИВ: ЗАБЫТЫЕ ДУШИ»), I explored similar territory — though my Archive is not a metaphor, but a system that controls destinies.   🕯 Kafka: Dignity in Hopelessness   What struck me most about Kafka — his heroes maintain dignity even in hopeless situations. They continue fighting, even knowing the fight is useless. This theme resonates in "ADENIUM: THE MIRROR CODE" («АДЕНИУМ: ЗЕРКАЛЬНЫЙ КОДЕКС»), where Anna Zimina battles a system far stronger than herself — but does not surrender.   ⚖️ Bulgakov: Where Real and Mystical Meet   "The Master and Margarita" showed me the perfect balance between reality and mysticism. Bulgakov creates a unified space where the mystical feels as natural as the everyday. Mysticism should grow from reality like a tree from the ground, not stick to it like a decoration.   🎭 Calvino: Complexity as Play   Italo Calvino showed me that literature can be both profound and playful. This playful complexity inspired "THIRTEEN KEYS" («ТРИНАДЦАТЬ КЛЮЧЕЙ»), where the novel's structure — a journey through 13 locations — becomes a metaphor for the search for self.   💡 Finding My Own Voice   The hardest part was finding my own voice in this chorus of greats.
